This development was announced in a statement issued by the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Commodore Cajethan Aniaku.

The statement noted that the prompt intervention of naval operatives prevented what could have been a major maritime tragedy.

According to the statement, the successful operation was hinged on a coordinated search and rescue operation, which was immediately launched by personnel from NNS Pathfinder, with support from four additional naval gunboats. All 99 passengers aboard the market boat were safely rescued.

Commodore Aniaku commended the rescue team’s bravery, swift response, and composure, noting their efforts were crucial in averting loss of life under challenging conditions.

He also reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maritime safety under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, promising continued vigilance and swift action to protect mariners and uphold security on Nigeria’s waterways.
