FCS football is on the verge of a significant scheduling shift. Beginning in 2026, programs at the Football Championship Subdivision level are expected to adopt a standardized 12-game regular-season schedule after the NCAA FCS oversight committee approved the proposal this week.
The recommendation, which moves to the NCAA Division I Council for final approval next month, would bring FCS football in line with its FBS counterparts, who have enjoyed a consistent 12-game format since 2006. The new format will standardize the FCS calendar with a 13-week schedule beginning annually on the final Thursday of August.
Under the current system, the number of FCS regular-season games varies based on the calendar year. Programs play either 11 or 12 games depending on how many weeks separate Labor Day weekend and the FCS playoff selection show, held the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
In its report, the oversight committee emphasized the benefits of consistency and equality with the FBS level:
“Standardizing the start date and number of contests in FCS football enhances the overall experience and provides FCS football student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in the same number of regular-season contests as FBS football student-athletes, regardless of the calendar year.”
If approved, the change will be welcomed by coaches, athletic departments, and student-athletes who have long advocated for uniformity in scheduling.
