The Indian Consulate in Melbourne, Australia was vandalised, with graffiti found at the front entrance of the diplomatic building, officials confirmed on Friday.

The Indian High Commission in Canberra said that it has raised the incident of defacing at the diplomatic building with the Australian authorities.

“The incident of defacing at the premises of the Consulate General of India in Melbourne by miscreants has been raised with Australian authorities. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomatic and consular premises and personnel in the country,” the high commission said in an X post.

Sharing details related to the incident, a police spokesperson said, “Officers believe the front entry of the building was graffitied overnight, sometime between Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 April. An investigation into the damage remains ongoing.”

The consulate officials have not yet issued any official statement concerning the incident, however, sources said that the matter has been raised with top Victorian officials and the Indian High Commission in Canberra.

This is not the first time that “anti-India hate” has been on display as last year in October, masked extremists broke into two Hindu temples in Canberra city of Australia and carried out vandalism and theft.

In a separate incident reported in 2023, Khalistani flags were discovered tied to the Indian Consulate in Brisbane, just days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Australia.

Earlier, the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Sydney was also vandalised with graffiti reading “Declare Modi Terrorist (BBC).”

Further, Khalistani elements had issued threats to the Kali Mata Mandir in Melbourne, warning against hosting a bhajan program featuring singer Kanhiya Mittal, who is known for his strong Hindu views.
