Can Flying Eagles celebrate 100th AFCON match with a victory against Kenya?

Soccer

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will be aiming to mark their 100th appearance at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations with a win when they face Kenya on Wednesday evening in Cairo, Soccernet.ng reports.

The encounter is crucial for both sides, albeit for different reasons. For Nigeria, a draw will be enough to confirm their place in the quarterfinals, while a win will likely see them top the group—depending on the result of the Morocco vs. Tunisia tie.

For Kenya, however, pride is at stake as they look to salvage something from a disappointing campaign thus far.

Soccer Nigeria’s Path to the Knockouts

After securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Morocco and edging Tunisia 1-0 in their opening game, Aliyu Zubairu’s team sit second in Group B with four points.

A draw against Kenya will take Nigeria to five points, which would seal their quarterfinal tickets irrespective of the outcome in the other group game.

If Morocco, who currently lead the group with four points, defeat Tunisia, they will finish with seven points.

Tunisia, currently on three points, would remain third. However, should Tunisia win, they would rise to six points, leapfrogging Morocco and potentially sending the North Africans to third place.

Soccer Kenya’s Struggles Continue

Kenya’s Rising Stars have found life in Cairo difficult. They lost their opening game to Morocco with a score of 3-2 and were outclassed 3-1 by Tunisia on Sunday. Against Nigeria, they must overcome history and current form to secure their first points of the competition.

While a victory against the Flying Eagles would be great for Kenya, history suggests otherwise. Nigerian teams have consistently dominated Kenyan opposition across all levels over the decades.

Soccer Nigeria vs Kenya: Head-to-Head Record

From 1968 to the present, Nigeria has overwhelmingly dominated their meetings with Kenya. Their first three friendly clashes between 1968 and 1991 saw Nigeria win twice and draw once in Nairobi.

Notably, Nigeria recorded a 3-0 win in a 1986 World Cup qualifier and a 3-1 victory in the return leg in Lagos.

The Flying Eagles also triumphed in the 1988 and 1992 AFCON group stages and went unbeaten in their 1998 World Cup qualifiers against the East Africans.

The Super Eagles continued their dominance with friendly wins in 2002, 2007, and 2011, and crucial victories en route to the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

Even at the U-23 level, Nigeria outclassed Kenya during the 1996 Olympic Games qualifiers, sealing a 3-0 win in Mombasa after a 1-1 draw on home soil.
