Nigeria and the U20 AFCON: How Flying Eagles fared in opening matches

Soccer

As Nigeria prepare to kick off their 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Tunisia on Thursday in Egypt, all eyes are on the Flying Eagles to see whether they can maintain their reputation as Africa’s most successful youth side, Soccernet.ng reports.

With a record seven titles, two silver medals and four bronze, Nigeria’s pedigree in this competition is undisputed.

Yet, their performances in opening matches over the decades paint a picture of highs and lows — a history that offers both caution and hope ahead of their Group A curtain-raiser.

Back in the 1980s, when the U20 AFCON was decided via home-and-away knockout ties rather than a group stage format, Nigeria’s dominance was unquestionable. Between 1981 and 1989, the Flying Eagles clinched four titles.

But the current group-stage structure only began in 1991 when the tournament adopted a host-country model — with Egypt playing host that year. Nigeria, however, failed to qualify.

Their return came in 1993 in Mauritius, where they were drawn alongside the hosts, Cameroon, and Ghana. That campaign ended in disappointment as Nigeria failed to progress from the group, losing two games — including a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon on matchday one.

Two years later, when Nigeria hosted the tournament in 1995, they opened with a pulsating 3-3 draw against Mali before eventually securing third place.

A breakthrough finally came in 1999 when the Flying Eagles won their first group-stage opener, edging Guinea 4-3.

The 2001 edition brought a low point. Held in Ethiopia, Nigeria failed to win a single match, opening with a goalless draw against Mali and crashing out at the group stage.

However, the Flying Eagles bounced back emphatically in 2005. They won the tournament in Benin Republic, kicking things off with a 3-0 thrashing of the hosts, courtesy of goals from Taye Taiwo, David Abwo, and Victor Obinna Nsofor.

In 2007, they started with a 4-2 victory over Zambia and marched to the final before falling narrowly to Congo.

Nigeria settled for bronze in 2009, starting with a 2-0 win over Egypt in Rwanda. Two years later, in South Africa, they defeated Ghana 2-1 in their opening match and went on to lift the trophy again.

But 2013 brought another early setback.

The Flying Eagles lost their opening game 1-0 to Mali in Algeria, ending a long run of strong starts.

They quickly made amends in 2015 by defeating Senegal 3-1 — a match remembered for Taiwo Awoniyi’s brace — before going on to claim their seventh title.

In 2019, Nigeria opened with a comfortable 2-0 win over Burundi in Niger, but in 2023, they fell to a narrow 1-0 loss against eventual champions Senegal.

Across their last 13 opening U20 AFCON matches, Nigeria have managed seven wins, two draws, and four defeats. Now, against Tunisia, they’ll be looking to write a new chapter — one that starts with a victory and ends with silverware.
