Odisha is currently enduring a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching record highs in its western districts. Boudh emerged as the hottest place in India on Sunday, registering a blistering 43.6°C, overtaking its Maximum temperature of 42.5°C the day before.

Temperature readings are alarmingly high across other regions as well, with Jharsuguda at 42°C, Bolangir at 41.7°C, and Angul at 41.1°C. Titilagarh stands at 40.5°C while Sundargarh is at 40.3°C. Bhawanipatna recorded a day temperature of 40.2°C, with Bhubaneswar and Cuttack at 36.8°C and 37°C, respectively.

This relentless heatwave has resulted in harsh living conditions across the State. March has witnessed a spike in temperatures, with the western part of the State experiencing levels 5-7 degrees above average. This extreme heat is compounded by a severe water shortage, as reservoirs deplete and water sources run dry.

To address the escalating situation, local meteorological departments have issued heatwave warnings for Western Odisha, effective until March 19. A red alert has been implemented for Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, and Kalahandi over the next two days, with yellow and orange warnings in place for other districts.

Thunderstorm activities after March 19

Meteorologists attribute these extreme conditions to the influx of hot air from the west and southwest, along with clear skies, amplifying the Sun’s heat. Relief may follow post-19th March, with anticipated thunderstorms in districts such as Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, and Jharsuguda potentially bringing down temperatures.

Power outage, water scarcity trouble denizens

Residents are struggling with power outages and water scarcity, issues exacerbated by the intense heat. In Ganjam district’s Bhanjanagar, particularly in Landeisahi, the insufficient water supply from taps intensifies the crisis, and non-functional water ATMs in Rourkela leave many without access to pure drinking water.

Local authorities are urged to reassess and act swiftly on water distribution strategies.

Some relief was felt in Nuapada district’s Taraborada, where a sudden thundershower and hailstorm temporarily disrupted the heat wave this afternoon. Such intermittent weather changes provided short-lived alleviation from oppressive heat in certain regions.
