What were you doing before February 14, 2005? One thing we can guarantee you weren’t doing was watching YouTube.

That likely changed not too long after that fateful Valentine’s Day, as the DIY streaming platform grew from an ultra-modern dating site to a Google-acquired juggernaut that now hosts just about every genre of video-based content imaginable (within reason, of course).

These days, YouTube is a global-spanning – and let’s be honest, time-wasting – phenomenon. However, it is one that boasts a hell of a lot more staying power than many a fallen social media rival.

Success hasn’t come without controversy – indeed, the very origins of YouTube reportedly stem from a shocking televised moment that pop culture will never forget – and we even have YouTube to thank for the endless wave of influencers that have bothered your phone screens for the last decade or so.
