Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner Calls Out Sports Media Colleagues for ‘Ridiculous’ Statements After Super Bowl

While many have reacted strongly to Super Bowl 59 and what it means for the Kansas City Chiefs organization after Andy Reid’s men were humiliated by the Philadelphia Eagles in a 40-22 blowout in New Orleans, Kurt Warner isn’t reading too much into it. In fact, the Hall of Fame quarterback has hit out at those in the media who have, in his eyes, massively overreacted.

Kurt Warner Calls Out the Media

Taking to social media, the Super Bowl 34 winner called out his sports media colleagues for what he described as “ridiculous” statements made since the Chiefs’ loss.

“With all due respect to my sports media colleagues – I’m amazed at all the RIDICULOUS statements made based on the outcome of one game!!!” he wrote.

“Take a deep breath ppl, then revisit in a couple days with a clear head!!!”

Given that the Chiefs were competing to do something that no team in the history of the NFL has achieved before, Warner may very well have a point.

Prior to the showdown in New Orleans, the Chiefs had only lost one competitive game with Patrick Mahomes as their starter since December 2023. While the complete battering they received at the hands of the Eagles is still fresh in people’s minds, it’s very much an outlier.

The Chiefs remain one of the best teams in the NFL and will be among the favorites again when the 2025-26 season gets underway.

Is Chiefs Criticism Deserved?

It’s now commonplace for broad, sweeping statements to be made based on a single game or even a single moment. In a modern world in which news and media needs to be instantaneous in order to stay relevant, it’s perfectly normal for rash statements to be made in the moment.

But it’s not as though this Chiefs performance has come completely out of nowhere. For much of the 2023 regular season and most of the 2024 season, Kansas City has gotten by without playing its best football.

#Chiefs yards per play rank in the Patrick Mahomes era:

2018: 1st
2019: 2nd
2020: 2nd
2021: 1st
2022: 1st
2023: 9th
2024: 22nd

It’s very possible, perhaps even likely, that members of the media that have questioned Kansas City’s performances have simply jumped at their apparent vindication. Mahomes and company definitely rode their luck in 2024, with a string of blocked field goals and botched snaps resulting in some miraculous wins. But you don’t win 17 consecutive one-score games without a bit of luck.

Ultimately, the Chiefs are the best by far at navigating the final minutes of a close game. If you want to beat Mahomes, you have to dominate and capitalize with points. The Eagles turned two first-half interceptions into 14 points courtesy of Cooper DeJean and A.J. Brown touchdowns.

Whilst many have been left doubting the Chiefs after their Super Bowl collapse, the attention should be focused on an incredible Eagles performance. Mahomes and the Chiefs will be back; you can bank on that.
