Canadian rider Michael Woods crashes out of Milano-Torino one-day cycling race

TURIN — Canadian cyclist Michael Woods, who won the race in 2019, crashed out of the Milano-Torino one-day race Wednesday.

Israel-Premier Tech, his team, said the 38-year-old from Ottawa suffered “a small non-displaced fracture of the left collarbone which may require surgery.”

“IPT’s medical team will decide on the next steps in consultation with an orthopedic specialist to determine the best course of action for Mike,” Israel-Premier Tech said in a social media post. “Fortunately, Mike is not displaying any symptoms of concussion and will be able to return home to begin his recovery.”

Mexican Isaac del Toro, riding for UAE Team Emirates XRG, won the 174-kilometre race in three hours 56 minutes seconds, finishing one second ahead of Britain’s Ben Tulett of the Dutch Visma–Lease a Bike team.

Nick Zukowsky of Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides, Que., riding for the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, finished 78th.

Woods held off Spanish star Alejandro Valverde at the line to win the 100th edition of the race in 2019.

“A really special victory for me, winning against Valverde, one of the best riders of his generation,” Woods said prior to Wednesday’s start.

Woods placed second behind Colombian Miguel Ángel Lopez in the 2016 edition of the race.
