Denmark star asks Manchester United to recognise his Nigerian roots

Soccer

Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu has made an important request to officially acknowledge his Nigerian heritage by incorporating ‘Chinazaekpere’ into his name, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 20-year-old, who joined United from Italian side Lecce for £25 million in January, now wishes to be recognised as Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu across all club records, including team sheets and official documents.

Dorgu’s decision stems from his deep-rooted Nigerian ancestry, with both of his parents hailing from the West African nation.

The name ‘Chinazaekpere’ is of Igbo origin and translates to ‘God answers prayers’—a reflection of his faith and personal identity.

United have already updated his profile on their website and matchday programme, ensuring that his full name appears in official squad lists moving forward, as per Manchester Evening News.

The Danish international, who has represented Denmark up to senior level, has quickly become an integral part of Rúben Amorim’s squad.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has made six Premier League appearances, all as a starter. However, a red card in United’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town saw him serve a three-match suspension. With his ban now complete, Dorgu is set to return for United’s upcoming clash against Nottingham Forest.

Born in Denmark, Dorgu developed through the youth ranks at Nordsjaelland before securing a move to Lecce, where he gained valuable experience in Serie A. His performances in Italy caught the attention of United, who saw him as a key part of their defensive rebuild under Amorim.

On the international stage, Dorgu has also made strides. He earned his first senior cap for Denmark in September 2024, marking his debut against Switzerland with a goal just 42 seconds after coming on.

During the recent Nations League fixtures, he played a vital role in Denmark’s campaign, providing an assist for Christian Eriksen in a 5-2 defeat to Portugal.
