What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?

Honestly, I got talked in playing football my second year of high school. After a couple days, I fell in love with the physicality of it.

What are your favorite moments from your football life?

My favorite moment was winning the MW Championship back in 2022 with Fresno State. We started that season off 1-4 and didn’t lose a game the rest of season. There’s so many storylines that people outside of that locker room will never know.

Another moment that comes to mind was my first football game ever. I had two sacks, two forced fumbles, and three TFLs that day.

What are you looking to achieve as a football player going forward?

I need to win a Super Bowl. In order to do that I need to show an NFL team I can add value to their roster.

If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?

It would probably be Grady Jarrett. I watched a lot of his film going into college.

Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?

My father inspires me the most. His work ethic and approach to life laid the foundation for who I am today.

What is your favorite defensive scheme and why?

As long as I get to put my hands on people, I’m not worried about scheme. There’s a play to be made in every defense.

What should we know about Matthew Lawson the person?

There’s never a dull moment around me. Ask anyone that I’ve played with. While I know how to keep a positive environment, I know when it’s time for business.

What stands out about your film the most?

My power, motor, IQ, and ability to anchor stand out the most. When you cut on my film you’ll see a guy thats a representation of his coaching.

How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?

I focus on what I can control. One thing I learned in college is that E + R = O. (Event + Response = Outcome) Events may not go your way but it’s how you respond to them that determine the equation.

Outside of that I turn to my faith for guidance.

What would a team get in a player like you?

They’re getting a guy that loves football not for what it provides but for what it is at its core. They’re getting a blank canvas that they can mold into whatever player they need.

What do you love the most about the game of football?

I love the concept of different people from different areas all coming together to work on a common goal.

Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?

The most underrated player I’ve played with is Seth McGowan. When you cut on his film you’ll see an elusive back with good balance that runs the ball like it means something.
