Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Pulisic, Macario, and more

Soccer

Christian Pulisic is stepping up at a key time of the season for AC Milan.

Pulisic scored his 15th goal of the season across all competitions as the Rossoneri defeated Como 2-1 in Serie A play on Saturday. The U.S. men’s national team forward has now scored three goals in his last two appearances, which bodes nicely for upcoming international duty.

After falling down 1-0 in the first half, AC Milan needed a second-half rally to get back into the match. Pulisic got onto the end of Tijjani Reijnders pass before slotting home for a 1-1 equalizer.

Reijnders would deliver the winning goal for the Rossoneri, giving Sergio Conceicao’s squad a massive three points in their quest for European Football.

The 26-year-old Pulisic now has 24 total goal contributions this season, two shy of his season total from 2023-24. AC Milan will rely heavily on Pulisic’s playmaking abilities over the final weeks of the campaign, but first the USMNT star heads into an important international window.

In England, Catarina Macario and Chelsea defeated Manchester City in the League Cup Final. Haji Wright scored three goals against Sunderland. Tyler Adams and Bournemouth lost at home to Brentford.

In Germany, Joe Scally returned as Borussia Moenchengladbach defeated Werder Bremen. Gio Reyna did not feature for Borussia Dortmund.

In Spain, Johnny Cardoso missed Real Betis’ win due to suspension.

In Italy, Yunus Musah also featured for AC Milan. Gianluca Busio made a slight cameo in Venezia’s goal-less draw with Napoli.

Elsewhere, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic lost at home to rivals Rangers. Alex Zendejas and Club America continued their hot start in Liga MX Clausura play. Sergino Dest earned his first start in over one year for PSV. Paxten Aaronson and FC Utrecht lost at home in Eredivisie action.
