Former Clemson Football Player Sentenced to Prison for Investment Scheme

A former Clemson football player is headed to prison after getting caught up in a huge multimillion dollar investment scheme.

John Leake of Texas was sentenced on Monday to 30 months in federal prison and is ordered to pay back 5.3 million in restitution.

Leake played guilty to wire fraud and money laundering in September. Leake solicited money from six victims.

According to prosecutors, Leake convinced his victims to loan him $8.1 million to invest in the properties in exchange for a high return on their investments.

Leake used the money to pay credit card bills, car payments, rent, and gambling expenses. His victims lost $5.3 million.

The Tennessee Titans signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2004. In 2005, Leake played for the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers. He resigned from the Falcons in his final season in 2006.
