Calvin Bassey: NFF, Fulham back Super Eagles star amid attacks after orchestrating Manchester United’s loss

Soccer

The Nigerian Football Federation have joined Fulham in condemning the racist attacks on Super Eagles star Calvin Bassey on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Bassey scored the solitary goal for Fulham in their penalty shoot-out win over Manchester United in the FA Cup round of 16 on Sunday. The Super Eagles star also produced a brilliant defensive effort for the Cottagers as they were only breached once.

However, after their win, Bassey was subject to a lot of racist slurs and discriminating comments from opposing fans on social media.

Following this incident, Fulham shared a release on their social media condemning the fans’ action. They also asserted their support for Bassey.

“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United,” the club wrote.

“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.

“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.

“Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.

Following Fulham’s message, the NFF released a statement shortly afterwards, backing Bassey.

“The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in the face of these unacceptable actions,” the NFF wrote.

“We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all players, both on and off the field. Calvin has our unwavering support, and together, we will continue to fight against racism in football and society.”

This is not the first time that a black player will be a victim of racist abuse. Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and other black players have experienced the same.

However, the English authorities are yet to comment on the matter as of the time of this report.
