Lions player rips Colts for how his release was handled

The Indianapolis Colts are under fire yet again for some odd workings within the building.

Though the Colts have tried to build a lasting culture of transparency and honesty since general manager Chris Ballard took over in 2017, there have been a handful of instances in which that hasn’t been the case.

The most recent example was the optics regarding Anthony Richardson’s back injury by head coach Shane Steichen to end the regular season.

However, another example has come to light — this one from Detroit Lions offensive tackle Dan Skipper.

The 30-year-old veteran signed with the Colts during the 2023 preseason but was released during roster cuts and signed to the practice squad. However, in an article from ESPN’s Katlyn Kahler, Skipper recalled being upset about how the Colts went about informing him of his release.

Six times in his career he’d gotten the call during camp to come in to see the general manager or head coach, or both, to get the bad news. But Skipper says the way the Colts handled it last season “really stung.” Instead of hearing it from head coach Shane Steichen or general manager Chris Ballard, Skipper says a pro personnel guy did it. “If you’re going to fire me, at least be man enough to have the head man fire me,” he says.

No team is perfect in handling every aspect of personnel, but there have been instances throughout Ballard’s tenure that have been contentious.

After missing out on the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, the Colts need to find a way to change the culture in the building. The easiest way to do so is to win football games.

Either way, this is another tough look for the Colts as they search for ways to get back into playoff contention in 2025.
