Around 323 feature films are reportedly eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards this year, but 116 of them (36%) are NOT eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the news in an announcement today. In some cases the filmmakers did not attempt to quality for the big award, with certain documentary, animated and international films fitting into this category.
In other cases, new eligibility rules require Best Picture candidates to meet certain benchmarks – some for their theatrical release strategy, some for diversity and inclusion in positions either during production or release of the films.
As is though, none of the Best Picture contenders in guilds or other awards bodies appear to have been excluded from competing.
Film titles excluded from Best Picture consideration this year include tentpole films like “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” “Boy Kills World,” “Madame Web” and “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” along with Andrea Arnold’s “Bird” and Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour”.
