Super Eagles star who wanted Chelsea: Did Boavista try to block Onyemaechi’s move to Greece?

Soccer

Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi has secured a move away from Portugal to join Greek champions Olympiacos, Soccernet.ng reports.

According to Transfermarkt, the Nigerian international joined the 47-time Greek Super League winners for a fee in the region of €2.5 million.

However, reports suggest that Boavista was reluctant to let Onyemaechi leave and attempted to block his transfer to Olympiacos.

The Porto-based club reportedly put up resistance to Onyemaechi’s move to Greece, although the exact reason remains unclear.

Bruno’s agent, Tiago Calisto, revealed that Boavista had previously prevented the defender from leaving, delaying the transfer for three consecutive windows.

“We have been waiting for this transfer since the last three transfer windows, but due to Boavista’s situation, the club was still blocking his exit. But now we have a smile, and everything is fine,” he said, as quoted by Africafoot.

Calisto also disclosed that Onyemaechi had multiple offers but ultimately chose Olympiacos.

“He joined a real club. He had 3-4 options, but he joined Olympiacos FC because the club showed that they really wanted him. It’s a big step for his career. I think he will do much more; I trust him.”

Onyemaechi: Super Eagles Star’s Earlier Cry for Chelsea

Shortly after scoring his first goal of the 2024-25 season in a 2-2 draw against Estrela de Amadora, Onyemaechi sparked speculation about his future by making a surprising social media post.

In his post, the Nigerian international urged fans to tag Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, which hints at a possible move.

“Scored my first goal of the season today, make una help me tag Todd Boehly abeg, I wan see something,” he wrote.

However, Onyemaechi later claimed his account had been hacked and dismissed the post. Despite this, the moment stuck with fellow Super Eagles star Victor Boniface, who playfully referenced it when congratulating Onyemaechi on his move to Olympiacos.

Onyemaechi is expected to make his first appearance for the Olympiacos against Levadiakos on Sunday.

If he continues to impress and adapt well to his new environment, he could still realise his dream of playing in the English Premier League, with time on his side.
