Victor Boniface: Bayer 04 Leverkusen receive massive boost in Bundesliga title race

Soccer

Reigning Bundesliga Champions, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, have received a massive boost in their title race with the return of Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old last played for club and country in Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to the Republic of Rwanda during the November International break.

After the game, it was confirmed Boniface had suffered a thigh injury, and faced a long spell out on the sidelines. In his absence, however, Die Werkself have gone from strength, winning eleven straight games, and are now within four points of Bayern Munich on the Bundesliga table.

Ahead of Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s trip to the Wanda Metropolitano, it was confirmed that the Nigerian trained with the rest of the team before they left Germany for Spain, where they will face Atletico de Madrid tomorrow.

According to German outlet, Kicker, Leverkusen’s technical director, Thomas Eichin, confirmed Boniface is nearing full fitness. However, the former Borussia Monchengladbach defender revealed the Super Eagles will not feature against Atletico Madrid.

“He’s participating in the training, but he is not an issue for Tuesday evening. He will not be a part of the team,” the 58-year-old said.

Xabi Alonso‘s men are in good goalscoring hands even without Victor Boniface. Since the former Union Saint-Gilloise striker got injured, Patrik Schick has kept Leverkusen amongst the goals in his place.

Since November 18, the Czech Republic striker has scored 12 goals in six starts for the Bundesliga Champions.
