The outlandish musical crime drama about a Mexican cartel leader who seeks to leave her life behind and transition into a woman was viewed as a long shot to win against such fierce competition. Emilia Pérez proved the haters wrong.
The Spanish-language film still walked away with ten nominations and four wins—including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Song. Plus, Zoe Saldaña (Lioness) beat Margaret Qualley (The Substance) and Ariana Grande (Wicked) for Best Supporting Actress. The polarizing film has stunned audiences ever since it premiered at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, when the cast collectively won the Best Actress award as an ensemble.
Lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón also gave a shout-out to the trans community during her acceptance speech for Best Picture at the Globes. “I chose these colors tonight—the Buddhist colors—because I have a message for you,” Gascón told the audience. “The light always wins over darkness. You can put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul or our resistance or our identity. I want to say to you, raise your voice and say that I won, I am who I am, not who you want [me to be].”
