The Chicago Fire are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Brazilian star Neymar, with discussions underway regarding a move to Major League Soccer (MLS). The 32-year-old forward’s contract with Al-Hilal is set to expire in the summer following two years in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League.

While the Fire are confident they could meet the financial demands of such a deal, negotiations remain complex. According to sources cited by BBC Sport, the transfer is far from finalized, and significant hurdles must be overcome. Neymar has not been registered to play in the second half of Al-Hilal’s domestic season, leaving his future open as he considers his next move.

Soccer Neymar’s MLS prospects and Chicago Fire’s position

MLS clubs have a unique mechanism called the Discovery List, which allows them exclusive rights to negotiate with certain players. Neymar has been included on Chicago Fire’s list, effectively barring other MLS teams from pursuing him unless the Fire give permission.

The league’s transfer window runs from January 31 to April 23, giving Chicago time to work out a deal. Neymar’s former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez already play in the league with Inter Miami. However, while Miami topped the Eastern Conference last season, Chicago finished at the bottom.

Soccer A rocky spell in Saudi Arabia

Neymar joined Al-Hilal in 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain for a record-breaking fee of £77 million. However, his tenure in Saudi Arabia has been marred by setbacks. The Brazilian striker made only seven appearances for the club, scoring a single goal before tearing his cruciate knee ligament in October 2023. The injury sidelined him for a year, limiting his impact and casting doubt on his future.

Al-Hilal head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed that Neymar would not feature in domestic league matches, restricting him to appearances in the Asian Champions League. With Al-Hilal currently leading the Pro League, the club’s focus has shifted, and Neymar’s situation remains unresolved.

Soccer What lies ahead for Neymar?

As Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, Neymar’s career is at a crossroads. The star forward, who has won multiple league titles and a Champions League trophy with Barcelona, now faces questions about his ability to compete at the highest levels.

Al-Hilal manager Jorge Jesus commented on Neymar’s struggles, stating, “The Saudi League is one of the best in the world, and all Al-Hilal players can compete in Europe. Neymar, unfortunately, can no longer perform at his peak. His future will depend on his decision and the club’s administration.”

For now, Neymar’s next chapter remains uncertain, as fans and clubs alike await his decision on where he will continue his storied career.
