What Gibbs-White said to Awoniyi after ending goal drought for Forest in 27 EPL matches

Soccer

Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest teammate, Morgan Gibbs-White, shared an uplifting message after the Nigerian forward ended his prolonged Premier League goal drought, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Tricky Trees moved level on 40 points with Arsenal, who are second in the EPL standings, following an impressive 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

Awoniyi, who came on for New Zealand striker Chris Wood in the 88th minute, seized his moment during his three-minute cameo, to score in the dying moments of the game to extend Forest’s lead. This goal marked the end of Awoniyi’s Premier League goal drought, which had persisted since February 2024.

Reacting on social media, Gibbs-White expressed his delight at seeing the Nigerian forward find the back of the net.

“[I’m] so happy for you, brother,” he wrote.

The Super Eagles star latched onto a pass from James Ward-Prowse after a brilliant counterattack by Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, finishing with a fine first-time shot from close range.

Awoniyi has endured a challenging adjustment to life in England, slipping down the pecking order at Nottingham Forest, where Chris Wood has been the preferred striker.

The Nigerian has been linked with a potential move away from the City Ground in the January transfer window in search of regular playing time. However, this goal could prove to be a turning point for Awoniyi’s fortunes at the club.
