Faith-aligned giving —how it helps create a sustainable and resilient world

Faith-aligned giving has long been a cornerstone of philanthropy in Asia-Pacific and India is no exception. Rooted in religious and spiritual traditions, ethics, and belief systems, both individuals and institutions harness the values of compassion, stewardship, and service to address social and environmental challenges.

By integrating spiritual principles with pragmatic solutions, faith-aligned philanthropy and investing have the potential to be an even more powerful driver of sustainable growth grounded in and enabled by resilient communities.  There are several examples where faith-aligned philanthropy is inclusive and transcends religious boundaries to address the needs of underserved populations irrespective of their faith.

The Tzu Chi Foundation, grounded in Buddhist values, provides healthcare, education, and disaster relief to communities worldwide without discrimination. Similarly, Bank Islam’s Sadaqa House, a Shariah-compliant crowdfunding platform, extends financial support to underprivileged communities of all faiths. These examples underscore the universality of faith-aligned giving and its commitment to humanity’s shared well-being.

Catalysing Long-Term Impact through Faith-Aligned Giving

The potential of faith-aligned giving extends far beyond immediate relief efforts. When strategically aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it can drive systemic change and address critical challenges such as poverty, climate change, and inequality. For example, the annual global zakat pool alone is estimated to exceed USD 200 billion.

The SDGs face a staggering annual funding gap of USD 2.5 trillion in the world’s developing countries. By directing faith-aligned resources towards achieving these targets, stakeholders can advance solutions in sustainable energy, education, and healthcare.  Faith-aligned actors, guided by values of stewardship and justice, are particularly well-positioned to address these gaps with initiatives that prioritise long-term, community-centred outcomes over short-term gains.

Art of Living, for instance, has undertaken long-term projects that help conserve the environment. The organisation’s ‘Mission Green Earth’ initiative has facilitated the planting of 55 million trees across 36 countries in collaboration with the United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) and the UN Environment Program (UNEP).  The campaign is indicative of faith-aligned institutions’ potential for driving action and fostering large-scale collaborations to address some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Emerging Approaches in Faith-Aligned Philanthropy

Faith-aligned giving is evolving, adopting innovative approaches to maximise its impact. Adopting innovative financing mechanisms, such as social development bonds and blended finance can enable the mobilisation of significant resources for projects addressing climate resilience, renewable energy, and social development. For instance, the issuance of green Sukuk (Sharia-compliant bonds) in Malaysia has financed large-scale environmental projects, demonstrating how faith-aligned finance can be a powerful driver of sustainable growth.

Faith-aligned philanthropy is also increasingly focusing on empowering local communities to build self-reliance and tackle systemic vulnerabilities. For instance, the Piramal Foundation in India, which works on the principles of innovation, collaboration and seva-bhav (selfless service), operates across 25 Indian states, delivering healthcare, education, and water services in partnership with state and central governments.

Moreover, faith-aligned giving has embraced a long-term perspective, prioritising outcomes that extend beyond immediate needs. Examples such as Islamic waqf (endowments), Sikhism and Hinduism’s sewa and Christianity-inspired stewardship funds are evidence of a commitment to creating lasting change by making accessible good quality education and healthcare and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Collaboration for Greater Impact

The strength of faith-aligned giving lies in its foundation of compassion and shared humanity. To harness its full potential, there is an urgent need for cross-faith collaboration. Faith-aligned giving can also benefit from deeper engagement with secular actors, governments, and the private sector. Essentially, all social investment is founded on common values of empathy, service, and justice. These values provide a firm basis for partnerships that transcend religious differences. Collaborative efforts can unite resources and expertise, driving large-scale initiatives to address global challenges such as poverty alleviation, climate action, and public health.

By building these bridges, it becomes possible to align resources and strategies, ensuring that investments achieve the broadest possible impact. The need of the hour is to create platforms where these conversations can be fostered and common grounds discovered.

 Unlocking Transformative Potential

As the world approaches the deadline for 2030 SDGs targets, we find ourselves in an all-hands-on-deck scenario.  Now is the time to recognise our collective humanity rather than focusing on differences. Through shared vision and action, faith-aligned giving can inspire a future where generosity is not just a moral obligation but a powerful force for good, creating lasting solutions for humanity and the planet.
