African champions Al Ahly keen on Nigeria’s all-time goalscorer in Manchester City history

Soccer

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have set their sights on Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho, currently plying his trade with Spanish outfit Sevilla, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 28-year-old has found life challenging in La Liga, struggling to make an impact since joining Sevilla on a free transfer in July 2024 after the expiration of his Leicester City contract.

Despite scoring three goals in two Copa del Rey appearances, Iheanacho has failed to hit the net or register an assist in nine La Liga games this season.

This lack of form has prompted Sevilla to consider parting ways with the Nigerian international just months into his two-year deal, as they seek a loan exit with an option to buy during the January transfer window.

According to the UK’s Daily Express, Al Ahly have joined the race to sign Iheanacho from Sevilla.

Al Ahly see Iheanacho as a potential replacement for Percy Tau, who is reportedly nearing an exit from the Cairo-based club.

However, the reigning African champions face stiff competition for his signature.

English Championship side Watford have reportedly expressed strong interest in a loan deal for the former Manchester City striker, while clubs in Greece, Turkey, and the USA are also monitoring his situation.

Iheanacho’s pedigree remains undeniable.

During his time at Manchester City, he became the club’s all-time leading Nigerian scorer, registering 21 goals and seven assists in 64 appearances.

He also played a pivotal role in Leicester City’s 2021 FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs.

For Al Ahly, securing Iheanacho would be a significant coup as they look to strengthen their attacking options.

His experience at the highest level and goal-scoring instincts could add a new dimension to their squad.

However, Watford’s determined pursuit and interest from other clubs suggest the battle for his services will intensify as the January transfer window unfolds.

Sevilla, meanwhile, are eager to resolve Iheanacho’s future swiftly, aiming to balance their squad while offloading a player who has yet to meet expectations in Spain.
