Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers is officially in the record books.

As Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Bowers surpassed Chicago Bears legend Mike Ditka for the most receiving yards in a season for a rookie tight end. Ditka tallied 1,076 receiving yards during the 1961 campaign, and Bowers surpassed that total with a reception during Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Later in the game, Bowers recorded his 106th catch, which topped Puka Nacua’s record for most by any rookie.

And there is the record catch for Brock Bowers. 106. Tops Puka Nacua for NFL rookie receptions record.

It has been a forgettable season for the 3-12 Raiders, but Bowers is a bright spot and a clear franchise cornerstone who should be a star for years to come.

Las Vegas selected him with the No. 13 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft after he was a two-time national champion and an All-American at Georgia. And he has more than lived up to sky-high expectations in his first season at the NFL level.

He entered Sunday’s contest with six games of more than 90 receiving yards, including when he surpassed the century mark against the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs. He is also a matchup nightmare with enough size and athleticism to pose problems for safeties and linebackers.

Bowers has put up these numbers while being the No. 1 option in the Raiders passing attack.

That means he draws plenty of attention from opposing defenses but has still found a way to set a rookie record after previously breaking Sam LaPorta’s rookie tight end record of 86 catches in a season that was set in 2023.

It should be noted Ditka holding that record for as long as he did is quite impressive. The Hall of Famer had 56 catches for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns in 1961 despite playing in a 14-game season when the rules were far less friendly for passing attacks.

The five-time Pro Bowler took home the Rookie of the Year for his efforts and saw his name remain in the record books for more than 60 years until Bowers broke it Sunday.
