Airtel and Google Team Up to Stream YouTube on Nigerian TVs

Airtel Nigeria has teamed up with Google to transform the way Nigerians access entertainment by bringing YouTube to television screens across the country. This groundbreaking partnership ensures that even older analogue TVs can now join the digital revolution, making high-quality streaming accessible to more homes than ever before.

This initiative was officially announced at Airtel Nigeria’s headquarters in Lagos. Through this partnership, YouTube will be seamlessly integrated into Airtel’s Smart Router. The Smart Router is a multipurpose device that combines high-speed internet connectivity with the ability to turn any television into a smart TV.

With this new feature, users can now access YouTube directly on their TVs to watch movies, sports, music videos, educational content, and much more. This move aligns with Airtel’s mission to close the digital divide and provide affordable access to world-class entertainment.

Speaking about the innovation, Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Commercial Officer, Femi Oshinlaja, described the partnership as a step towards enhancing digital entertainment in Nigerian households.

“At Airtel, we’re committed to bridging the digital gap. The Airtel Smart Router isn’t just about internet connectivity; it’s about delivering a complete entertainment experience. Through this collaboration with Google, we’re giving Nigerians access to the rich content on YouTube, right from their living rooms,” he said.

The Airtel Smart Router is designed with simplicity and functionality in mind. Priced at N25,000, it comes with 30 days of unlimited data to help users kickstart their streaming journey. Families can now enjoy their favorite cartoons, football matches, movies, music, and more without needing to purchase an expensive smart TV.

Femi Adeniran, Airtel’s Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility, added, “This partnership with Google reflects our dedication to enhancing the digital lifestyle of our customers. The YouTube integration on the Smart Router provides an effortless way for families to connect with content that entertains, educates, and inspires.”

Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, expressed his excitement about the collaboration. “YouTube has always been about connecting people to the content they love. This partnership makes it even easier for Nigerians to enjoy their favorite videos, explore new hobbies, and stay informed—all from the comfort of their living rooms. It’s an important step towards fostering digital inclusion across Africa,” he said.

Further emphasizing the significance of this partnership, Mahesh Bhalerao, Director of EMEA Product Partnerships for YouTube, highlighted YouTube’s role as a platform for creativity and connection.

“With Airtel’s Smart Router, more Nigerian homes will have access to a wealth of content, from entertainment to educational resources. This collaboration is about empowering audiences to discover, learn, and enjoy everything that YouTube offers.”
