Why Daniel Ogunmodede stands in for Augustine Eguavoen in crucial Eagles B clash with Ghana

Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen is currently recuperating in Belgium after undergoing a major medical procedure, Soccernet.ng reports.

The surgery, postponed several times to allow Eguavoen to focus on the Super Eagles’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign, was reportedly successful, with follow-up treatments already planned.

In his absence, Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede has stepped in to manage the Super Eagles B team, with support from Rangers manager Fidelis Ilechukwu.

The pair has been tasked with leading the team in a crucial 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) playoff against Ghana’s Black Galaxies.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ogunmodede recognised the difficulties Nigeria has faced against Ghana’s Black Galaxies in the past but emphasised the crucial need to secure qualification for the country.

“We know history has not been sincere with us as a country. So, we’ve decided not to pay attention to what history has done to us. We pay maximum attention to the present and what the future holds for us. We know how important it is for us to qualify. If we qualify, we have a good future for ourselves—for the players, for the coaches, and for the country and the incoming generation of footballers in the country. We need to give everything to be a good market for the league. To whom much is given, much is expected.” he told NFFtv.

Eguavoen, who also serves as the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) Technical Director, was temporarily appointed to lead the Super Eagles pending the arrival of a foreign head coach. However, his health challenges have required a temporary delegation of his responsibilities.

The Eagles B team will face Ghana in Uyo, hoping to secure a spot in the CHAN tournament, set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania next year.
