Danny Murphy claims Man Utd star would be ‘much better’ at Arsenal | Football

Danny Murphy believes Marcus Rashford would be ‘much better’ at Arsenal amid speculation Manchester United are prepared to sell the forward.

It was reported earlier this week that United were open to selling Old Trafford academy graduate Rashford ahead of the January transfer window.

This is Rashford’s tenth season at the club and it has been suggested that a move could be beneficial to all parties, with his form inconsistent at best and resulting in him losing his place in the England team.

Rashford’s best season to date came in 2022-23 when he scored 30 goals in all competitions under Erik ten Hag.

But his returns dropped back down to single digits last season and Rashford has continued to blow hot and cold this term with four goals in 15 league games.

Ex-England midfielder Murphy cannot see Rashford leaving Manchester United but admits he may be ‘better’ at Arsenal, or even Tottenham.

‘He should be doing more for the talent he’s got,’ Murphy told talkSPORT. ‘I think we’ve already seen the best of Marcus Rashford but he’s capable of getting to that level again.

‘I think [new United manager] Ruben Amorim is capable of doing that. I think the scenario of him going is unrealistic, I think he will stay and Amorim will get more out of him.

‘He had one world-class season, his numbers were superb. With the ability he’s got, I think he’s capable of more.

‘He’s been at a club for a long time but the managerial situation has never been stable, there’s been a lot of change.

‘If he was in a better team, a more successful team, under a more competent manager than some we’ve seen at United, we might have seen a different outcome.

‘He has wonderful attributes but his biggest problem is the perception. He looks down on himself, slumped.’

When it was suggested by a fan that Rashford should move to Arsenal, Murphy added: ‘You know what, you never know for sure but playing in a team that’s so settled and so confident and competent, there is a case that his end product would get much better, because Arsenal are really dominant in games.

‘You could argue that Martinelli has been a bit hot and cold… There would be some people who would take Rashford over Martinelli.’

A Tottenham supporter also suggested Rashford would thrive at Spurs to which Murphy said confidently: ‘He would do well there.’

Murphy also described Rashford as the ‘best’ forward Manchester United have got.

Amorim has the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo at his disposal but Murphy says Rashford is the pick of the bunch.

‘He’s still the best one, on his day, He’s the most dangerous one,’ he said.

‘If I looked at all their front players and thought, “Who can win me a game? Who can score a goal? Who’s going to hurt people? I’d have him ahead of Garnacho, Hojlund and Antony this season.’

Fellow talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan, meanwhile, believes Amorim will either make or break Rashford following his arrival in Manchester.

‘I think he’s been allowed to develop into some sort of rut by certain managers,’ the ex-Premier League owner said.

‘We listen to what I thought was a pitiful podcast he did telling us how woeful his life was at times and how challenging it was, we’ve seen observations from his mother about the fact he’s picked on in the press and so on.

‘But Marcus is capable of doing far better than he’s doing. I think it’s down to the manager.

‘Whatever he does or doesn’t do, is what he’s allowed to do by the manager. I think this manager will burn him or churn him.’
