
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday congratulated Republican candidate Donald Trump on his presidential election win, hailing the “unshakeable” ties between Italy and the US.Meloni offered her “sincere congratulations to US President Donald Trump” in a post on X.
“Italy and the United States are ‘sister’ nations, linked by an unshakeable alliance, common values and a historic friendship. It is a strategic bond which I am sure we will now strengthen even more,” she added.
Meloni, who leads the Brothers of Italy party, claimed victory in the September 2022 general election on the back of a nationalist, anti-immigration campaign, but is a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini also congratulated Trump on his election win on Wednesday.
“Patriotism, border control, tax cuts, Christian roots, freedom of speech, commitment to world peace. Common sense, passion and hope WIN in the US! What a historic day!” Salvini wrote in a post on X.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday Donald Trump’s election “will give stability to the US, a great partner of ours”.
“I am convinced we will work well with the new administration,” he added, saying that Trump “has a natural liking for Italy”.
Other European leaders congratulated Trump as he claimed victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Berlin would work with the new administration “to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic”.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he was ready to work with Trump “with respect and ambition” like “we managed to do for four years”.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen also commented on Trump’s win, writing on X: “The EU and the US are more than just allies. We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens. So let’s work together on a strong transatlantic agenda that keeps delivering for them.”
