One of the greatest defender in U.S. women’s national team history is calling it a career.
Becky Sauerbrunn announced his retirement from professional soccer, U.S. Soccer revealed Tuesday. The 39-year-old enjoyed a 16-year pro career, winning three NWSL titles, and one NWSL Shield.
She was named to the NWSL Best XI seven times and was named Defender of the Year on four occasions.
On the international level, Sauerbrunn won two FIFA Women’s World Cups, one Olympic Gold Medal, and one Bronze Medal. She earned 219 international caps (10th most in USWNT history), registering seven assists in all competitions.
“I learned early on that we were all just renting our jerseys,” said Sauerbrunn. “That I got to wear the U.S. Soccer crest once was an honor and privilege for which I’m forever grateful. The fact that I got to do it over 200 times is truly humbling. I competed with and learned from some of the greatest players and leaders this sport has ever seen, and I consider myself beyond lucky to have been able to play a small part in this program’s storied history.”
Sauerbrunn also helped the USWNT win eight CONCACAF championships, five SheBelieves Cups, and one Tournament of Nations.
She will certainly go down as one of the best players to represent the USWNT, both on and off the pitch.
