West Virginia football roster under Rich Rodriguez: Transfer portal, recruiting, staff news by WVU experts

Football

Rodriguez went 60-26 as the head coach at WVU from 2001-2007 before leaving to take the head coaching role at Michigan. Rodriguez spent three seasons in Ann Arbor, six seasons at the University of Arizona and three seasons at Jacksonville State before his coaching journey brought him home to his alma mater once again.

Football West Virginia football roster news

Rodriguez’s offense at Jacksonville State this past season was one of the best in the nation and now he’ll look to replicate that formula in Morgantown next season. The Gamecocks averaged 267.3 rushing yards per game and QB/RB tandem Tyler Huff and Tre Stewart combined for 2,943 yards and 37 touchdowns on the ground last year and Rodriguez appears likely to attract several members of his offensive coaching staff to West Virginia this offseason.

The latest West Virginia coaching board includes current Jacksonville State interim coach Rod Smith could be an offensive coordinator candidate if he isn’t named head coach of the Gamecocks and analyst Rhett Rodriguez, the coach’s son, could be in line to become the quarterbacks coach. Meanwhile, former Clemson running back Rod McDowell followed Rodriguez from Louisiana-Monroe (where he was offensive coordinator) to Jacksonville State and is a likely candidate to make a jump as well.

Rodriguez has also mentioned that he expects the defensive staff to fall into place after he hires a coordinator and for that process to come together quickly so that Mountaineers can hit the college football transfer portal hard. So who are the top West Virginia defensive coordinator candidates and how will they impact WVU on the recruiting trail? Get more West Virginia football roster updates at EerSports
