After failing to land an NFL head coaching job during last year’s hiring cycle, Bill Belichick is headed to the college football ranks. He’s the new head coach at the University of North Carolina, according to multiple reports.
Why is this news relevant to the Philadelphia Eagles? Well, there was thought that the Birds might hire him to replace Nick Sirianni after 2024. Thought that was rooted in the Eagles reportedly showing some interest in Belichick before the Eagles decided to retain Sirianni despite the team’s historic collapse at the end of 2023.
Sirianni has obviously rebounded since last year’s rough finish with the Eagles winning nine straight games to advance to an 11-2 record with four regular season games left to play. Barring another tailspin and/or a first-round blowout playoff loss, Sirianni seems poised to return for 2025. So, it’s not like Belichick seemed to really be in play anymore anyway.
But there was also some thought that Belichick could land elsewhere in the NFC East. Mike McCarthy’s contract is up at the end of this season and Brian Daboll is very much on the hot seat. If the Dallas Cowboys and/or New York Giants end up looking for a new head coach, they won’t be hiring Belichick.
