Attractive Asus ROG Ally price leak spells doom for the Steam Deck – NotebookCheck.net News

Earlier this week, Asus confirmed it would announce the ROG Ally’s price and availability on May 11. It also said its price would be “below US$1,000” for both variants. Now, Twitter leaker SnoopyTech has some exciting news for gamers and potentially bad news for the Steam Deck.

The Asus ROG Ally with an AMD Z1 Extreme APU will supposedly cost only US$699. The Best Buy listing for the console  also highlights it, complete with 512 GB of internal storage. That said, it could also be a placeholder value, and the listing could be updated once Asus properly unveils the handheld.

Previous Geekbench listings showed the performance delta between the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Ryzen Z1 to be quite significant. Even AMD’s official slides said the same. Therefore, the aforementioned listing is likely for the top-spec model, and one can assume the Ryzen Z1-powered variant to retail at around US$499.

This could be problematic for the Steam Deck, as the Asus ROG Ally has much better hardware than Valve’s handheld. One can get a 1080p 120 Hz screen and a blazing-fast Zen 4 chip for the same price as a 512 GB Steam Deck with the same amount of storage. Battery life could, however, be a sore point despite Asus’ claims of it being on par with its main competitor.

While the Asus ROG Ally’s real-world performance is still a mystery (Geekbench doesn’t count), AMD’s Frank Azor has confirmed it can run Fortnite at 1080p 60 FPS. He doesn’t specify the graphics settings or if any resolution upscaling tech was used. Nonetheless, it is still quite impressive for a handheld.
