Google Pixel 7a: Leaked screenshots suggest Face Unlock support for new mid-range smartphone

Google’s support for Face Unlock returned last year with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, having been dropped for the Pixel 5 and Pixel 6 series. The company’s current flagships only offer a 2D-based Face Unlock though, which lacks the security that the 3D equivalent in the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL provided. Now, @_snoopytech_ has shared screenshots demonstrating that Google will bring its new face unlock method to the Pixel 7a.

Embedded below, the images show a System Settings sub-menu in which options for Face and Fingerprint Unlock are available. It is worth noting that there was evidence that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro would support Face Unlock, only for Google to drop it shortly before release. Also, Google’s Face Unlock solution is only suitable for getting passed the lock screen and cannot be used with banking apps that require more robust authentication methods.

Based on earlier leaks, the Pixel 7a will launch with a Tensor G2 chipset, as well as 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage. Moreover, the handset is rumoured to feature the Sony IMX787 as its primary camera, a 64 MP sensor, plus a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The Pixel 7a is anticipated to launch for US$499 in the US and €499 in the Eurozone too, US$50 and €50 more expensive than the Pixel 6a. Google is expected to sell the Pixel 6a and the Pixel 7a alongside each other when the latter debuts on May 10, though.
