Compal has announced the Mobile Office, its latest concept laptop. Presented with an unusual design, the Compal Mobile Office brings a new form factor to the laptop market with a foldable palm rest and hidden ports, among other features.

Compal continues to push the boundaries of what is possible within a conventional laptop form factor, even if its designs mainly remain as concepts. The Compal Mobile Office is no different, details of which the IF Design Award has shared on its website. Arguably, the standout feature of this laptop is its foldable palm rest, which can be tucked under its keyboard to reduce the device’s footprint.

While the trackpad becomes inoperable in this mode, inputs could be handled via the device’s touchscreen or an external mouse. Compal adds that its design should also improve cooling via device-wide heat fins visible when the palm rest is foldable. Additionally, folding the palm rest away reveals additional ports, which Compal has visualised as two USB Type-A ports, a 3.5 mm jack and an SD card reader.

Theoretically, the Mobile Office would be easier to hold in one hand and work with the other than a conventional laptop. Likewise, the company shows the potential of the Mobile Office’s capabilities on the road or as a way to minimise desk clutter. It remains to be seen whether any laptop ODMs will licence the design, but more details can be found on the IF Design Award’s website.
