Spock takes command in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 teaser

With Star Trek: Picard coming to an end this week, and Star Trek: Discovery slated to conclude next year, the future of the franchise now rests in the hands of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This series is a spinoff of Discovery and takes place a decade before the original series, with Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike as the captain of the Enterprise. But as seen in the first teaser trailer for Strange New Worlds season 2, Spock (Ethan Peck) is also going to get his first chance to sit in the captain’s chair.

Amusingly, Spock hasn’t mastered the fine art of iconic bridge commands. And although the Enterprise bridge crew attempts to give Spock a hand while picking out his catchphrase, he still manages to hilariously overcomplicate it. There’s also a fun moment as Spock drinks with a Klingon warrior, only to have an unexpected response to his intoxicating beverage.

The trailer also formally introduces Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk, after his brief appearance in the Strange New Worlds season 1 finale. And as you can see from the clip above, Kirk is already living up to his reputation as a ladies man when La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) can’t hide her immediate attraction to the future captain of the Enterprise.

Rebecca Romijn also stars in the series as the Enterprise’s first officer, Una Chin-Riley, with Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M’Benga, and Bruce Horak as Hemmer.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will premiere on Paramount+ on June 15.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds casts Paul Wesley as Kirk

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will explore the cosmos with the original captain of the Enterprise, Christopher Pike, this spring. However, the prequel series apparently has plans for Pike’s successor as well. Via Deadline, Paul Wesley has signed on for season two as a younger version of James T. Kirk. William Shatner’s Captain Kirk was one of the icons of the original Star Trek. For the reboot films, Chris Pine has assumed the role of Kirk in three movies to date.

Wesley previously headlined The Vampire Diaries for eight seasons as Stefan Salvatore. More recently, he appeared in Tell Me A Story and the Shudder original film History of Evil. Wesley has expanded his career to directing, helming episodes of Shadowhunters, Legacies, and Roswell, New Mexico.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer embraces the unknown

Anson Mount in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The opening credits of the original Star Trek promised a journey that would “explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!” However, there are only so many times that we can see Klingons, Vulcans, or Romulans before they just aren’t “new” anymore. Later this year, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is rolling back the clock to the earliest days of the Enterprise. And from here, the sky is the limit in terms of races and worlds we’ve never seen before.

Only hardcore Trekkies remember that Captain Kirk and his crew weren’t the original main characters of Star Trek. A single pilot episode, “The Cage,” was produced with Captain Pike, Number One, and a young Spock. Pike and Number One would have remained in obscurity if they hadn’t resurfaced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. They, along with Spock, will be back for Strange New Worlds. In the first teaser trailer, Pike rediscovers his sense of purpose.

Paramount is planning to film Star Trek 4 later this year

Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine in Star Trek.

There’s so much Star Trek television on Paramount+ that it’s easy to forget that there hasn’t been a feature film in the franchise since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. The good news for Trekkies is that the long hiatus between movies may be rapidly drawing to a close.

According to a report on Deadline, J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Paramount has resumed talks with Chris Pine for him to reprise his role as James T. Kirk in Star Trek 4. The report also indicates that Paramount wants the reboot cast to return. That includes Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg.
