MediaTek has announced that its flagship Dimensity line of mobile SoCs has gone Auto with a new range of computing solutions for next-gen vehicles. It challenges Qualcomm’s latest offerings for the same industry pretty directly, purporting to cover the needs of the “smart cockpit” and connectivity on the road as well as automatic driver assistance systems (ADAS), delivered through the OEM’s cutting-edge architecture.

MediaTek has acted on its realization that “the era of intelligent, always-connected vehicles has arrived” with the launch of a machine learning/vision-capable “scalable…multi-processor” platform for next-gen cars, developed to port the Dimensity name to the automotive industry.

On that note, it also packs MiraVision technology, rated to put up-to-8K/120Hz HDR screens in a car, as well as multiple “HDR-nativecameras. That prospect is part of the new Dimensity Auto Cockpit solution, which patently challenges Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Ride analog for the title of “world’s fastest smart cockpit“.

To this end, it is based on a 3nm processs, as opposed to 4nm in Qualcomm’s case. It could be installed alongside Dimensity Auto Connect which, again, directly targets the Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF Gen 2 with support for Wi-Fi 7; GNSS; sub-6GHz 5G; Bluetooth, and MediaTek’s 5G NTN tech for satellite connectivity.

Dimensity Auto Drive has also been unveiled to apply the potential of MediaTek’s APUs to AI-enhanced ADAS. Finally, MediaTek assures auto-makers that it will not leave peripherals hanging with a “diverse” range of Dimensity Auto Components such as “assured…PMIC solutions“, integrated display support that might extend to the use of flexible OLED and positioning systems touted to stay on, even out of the reach of satellites.

In short, the new platform seems to be capable of making a car as smart as a cutting-edge mobile device – there is even a “dedicated DSP for microphone audio“. MediaTek has yet to estimate when the first Dimensity Auto-powered car will be on the road.
