NVIDIA has presented the GeForce RTX 4070, its latest mid-range graphics card. Based around the AD104 GPU and Ada Lovelace architecture, the GeForce RTX 4070 is billed as delivering strong value for money thanks to 5,888 CUDA cores, 12 GB GDDR6X VRAM and DLSS 3.0 support, among other features.

NVIDIA has announced the GeForce RTX 4070, a day before the AD104-based graphics card goes on sale. As expected, the GeForce RTX 4070 is considerably cheaper than the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti while offering tangible performance gains over the GeForce RTX 3070 and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. NVIDIA compares GeForce RTX 4070 performance levels against the GeForce RTX 3080 too.

However, the capabilities of DLSS 3 accounts for a lot of these performance gains. According to NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX 4070 is ‘on average 2.6x faster’ than the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER with DLSS 3, or 1.4x faster than the GeForce RTX 3080. Also, NVIDIA promotes the GeForce RTX 4070 as having 2 GB more VRAM than the GeForce RTX 3080, as well as the faster GDDR6X variant.

Initial reviews from the likes of ComputerBase and Gamers Nexus suggest that the GeForce RTX 4070 is 20/30% faster than its direct predecessor and is a percent behind the GeForce RTX 3080. Additionally, the GeForce RTX 4070 falls about 20% behind the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, despite having a US$200 lower price tag. For reference, the GeForce RTX 4070 relies on a cutdown version of the AD104 GPU with 5,888 CUDA cores.

Accordingly, NVIDIA’s new graphics card has 23.3% fewer CUDA cores than the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. NVIDIA has dropped the TGP to 200 W too, but the GeForce RTX 4070 retains the same memory bandwidth as its Ti-branded sibling. NVIDIA and its board partners will start selling the GeForce RTX 4070 from April 13 for US$599. At launch, GeForce RTX 4070 board partners include ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY and ZOTAC.
