Tesla opens its V4 Superchargers to other EV owners who praise the long cable parking comfort

‘Sometimes size does matter,’ said Tesla when announcing that the new V4 Supercharger cables are ‘longer so everyone can plug in easily.’ The first next-gen Supercharger V4 station of Tesla is now open to all electric vehicle brands and models to peruse at a slightly higher price than Tesla car owners.

Tesla recently unveiled its first charging station populated with its next V4 stall generation design. On the outside, at least, if not in specs, as the chargers are still with 250 kW maximum output. The piles are tall, slender, and, perhaps most importantly, with cables running on the outside rim, rather than nestled in the internal arch like on current Supercharger stations.

This allows electric vehicles other than Tesla to pull up with their front or rear, and makes charging them without parking diagonally easier. Other EVs have port placements different than what Tesla installs on its cars, and parking them in a manner suitable for the reach of current pile cables can be a challenge, as the opening of Tesla’s Supercharger network in the US recently demonstrated.

It seems that Tesla has made these new V4 stations precisely with the vision to make charging all electric vehicles easier as it just opened them for the general EV public. Not only that, but Tesla also confirms this sharing notion with phrases like “sometimes size does matter” as it “made the cable longer so everyone can plug in easily.”

Tesla’s first Supercharger V4 station piles are located nearby a highway to Amsterdam, a busy location in the nation with the densest EV charging network in Europe. The easier charging access to the V4 piles with much longer cables remains to be extensively tested by local EV owners. Still, the first anecdotal evidence from people who already charged their non-Tesla vehicles there shows that the new V4 design with a longer cable is indeed more ergonomic and does away with the parking obstruction anxiety.
