AIIMS Delhi to go 5G

Business

The All India Institute Of Medical Science in New Delhi has announced its plan to put up 5G mobile connection across the campus.

A news report noted from an office memorandum that the campus targets to get 5G-enabled by 30 June. A special committee dedicated to this implementation will send out an official expression of intent to 5G mobile service providers this week.

WHY IT MATTERS

According to AIIMS Delhi Director Dr M. Srinivas, having the strength of a 5G mobile network will allow the medical campus to maximise its usage of communications technology for patient care, teaching, and research. As the hospital receives about 50,000 patient visits each day, he said it is vital to have good mobile connectivity. Staff, visitors, and patients had complained about some dark spots around the institute with very poor to no connection.

Additionally, 5G connectivity will enable the deployment of an integrated medical university information system, as well as allow faculty members to keep in touch with their colleagues from other AIIMS institutes and outreach campuses.

THE LARGER TREND

Presently, AIIMS Delhi is undergoing a digital transformation; it is set to fully implement the e-hospital HMIS by the National Informatics Centre this year and an all-digital payments facility starting this April.

Apollo Hospitals recently started conducting what could be the first 5G-enabled and AI-guided colonoscopy trial in India. The said procedure ran AI over 5G connection provided by Bharti Airtel, which resulted in faster and more accurate detection of suspicious findings indicative of colon cancer.
