Documents leaked from Gigabyte reveal that AMD’s AM5 platform supports Rembrandt and Phoenix processors in addition to the Raphael Ryzen 7000X released last year. This suggests that Team Red is preparing to update the Ryzen G-series with 6000G and 7000G models featuring the more powerful RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 iGPUs.
The Ryzen G-series of processors essentially offers mobile-grade processors in desktop form-factor. This was an excellent product before the Ryzen 7000X series, as AMD’s desktop processors did not feature iGPUs. However, all desktop processors with Zen 4 cores now come with an iGPU, albeit a very simplistic version that is far slower compared to the upcoming Radeon 700M models integrated with the upcoming Ryzen 7040 Phoernix APUs. More powerful desktop iGPUs could soon come with the introduction of Ryzen 6000G and 7000G models.
Twitter user @9550pro (HXL) noticed that a table leaked with last year’s Gigabyte hack is showing three types of processors for the AM5 platform. The only available desktop processors for ASM5 right now are the Raphael Ryzen 7000X launched in late 2022. These appear as the “60h-6Fh” models in Gigabyte’s table. The “70h-7Fh” type, on the other hand, could reference the upcoming Phoenix models, while the “ 40h-4Fh” one may correspond to the previous Ryzen 6000 Rembrandt mobile processors.
Besides the updated CPU core architecture over the Ryzen 5000 Renoir models, these new G-series processors would finally replace the Vega iGPUs with RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 models, respectively. From previous leaks, the RDNA3 iGPUs look quite promising, almost matching an Nvidia GTX 1650 dGPU.
Both new G-series types will also support DDR5, but will be limited to PCIe 4.0 most likely, just like the mobile counterparts. Additionally, PCIe lane count will be reduced from 28 to 20. To compensate for this, though, AMD is adding support for up to two USB-C connectors with USB4 speeds, on top of the usual USB-A 3.2 and USB 2.0.
Hopefully, AMD does not delay the retail release for the 7000G models by more than a year yet again. Team Red most likely had to prioritize the X-series during the pandemic, but now that production capacities are not that strangled anymore, the G-series should see increased availability.
