Tesla will announce the vehicle assembly plans for its new Gigafactory in Mexico in three months when it starts building it, according to local officials. The size of Giga Nuevo León will be nearly twice that of Giga Texas and Tesla may finally reveal if it plans to make the Model 2 there as is rumored.

While Tesla didn’t directly announce its first mass market US$25,000 Model 2 vehicle on Investor Day as many of its fans expected, it did outline the next-generation platform on which it could be built. Elon Musk also confirmed on stage that the newly unveiled Gigafactory in Mexico will be, as the announcement said, “manufacturing our next-gen vehicle,” too.

That jibes with what was first reported by local officials from Nuevo León where the Giga Mexico factory is going to be constructed. “In future phases it would be a new model with a lower cost than the current ones,” they said at the time, most likely referring to Tesla’s next-gen platform for affordable electric vehicles like the rumored Model 2.

Giga Mexico will allegedly be geared towards making parts for the Cybertruck and Model Y at first, given its proximity to Giga Texas, but at one point it would reportedly serve as a hub for Tesla Model 2 production, too,  with up to US$10 billion investment when all of its expansions are finalized.

Another local official is now claiming that Tesla’s upcoming Gigafactory in Nuevo León will be constructed on an industrial lot spanning 4,200 acres, so it would ultimately be nearly two times larger than its Giga Texas counterpart. That fact alone presupposes big plans for affordable production of various Tesla vehicles, including the mass market Model 2.

Jesus Nava, the mayor of Santa Catarina, also divulged that Tesla will announce the type of vehicles it will make at Giga Mexico when its construction starts in three months. That’s when it could give further hints about its eventual Model 2 specs, production plans, and release date.
