Dispatches from Ukraine. Day 370.

As Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues and the war rages on, reliable sources of information are critical. Forbes gathers information and provides updates on the situation.

Kherson. According to Kherson’s regional administration, a Russian artillery attack today killed four people and wounded five others.

Donetsk region. Russian shelling of Svyatohirsk yesterday killed one person and wounded others, including one rescue worker at the State Emergency Service building.

According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the Russian army’s current focus lies on conducting offensive operations around Kupianks, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Shakhtar and other strategic locations, where Ukrainian forces repelled 81 such attacks yesterday. Russian forces also launched eight missile strikes, 32 aerial attacks and 85 MLRS barrages during the same period. The General Staff expects further rocket attacks.

General Oleksandr Syrskyy, commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, describes the fighting near Bakhmut as the most intense. “The situation in the Bakhmut area is extremely volatile.” he stated. “Despite suffering significant losses, the adversary persists in deploying the best-trained assault units of the Wagner paramilitary group in an attempt to breach our defensive lines and encircle the city.”

In an overnight attack attributed to Ukraine, two drones exploded at the Tuapse oil depot in Russia, setting it on fire, 30 meters from barracks belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Other unidentified UAVs reportedly crashed in at least three Russian regions. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attacks or otherwise commented on them.

Air raid sirens and rocket alarms have sounded for the past two days in several Russian regions, including Moscow’s suburbs, Leningrad, Voronezh, Belhorod and Perm. Russia has attributed these alerts to cyberattacks on radio and television stations.

Germany has committed to providing Ukraine two short-range-air-defense systems, the The Wall Street Journa reports. Rheinmetall AG, a German automotive and arms manufacturer, will produce these systems, which were commissioned by the Federal Government for €200 million. Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, stated that the company likely would deliver the systems to Ukraine within 12 months. Rheinmetall is a primary supplier to the German armed forces, which otherwise would have deployed the systems to protect Berlin.

Ukraine’s National Agency for Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) has added Germany’s Metro Shelving and Storage to its list of companies sponsoring the war. The retail giant announced plans in 2019 to develop a franchise of shops in financial cooperation with Sberbank, a Russian majority-owned banking and financial services company headquartered in Moscow. Despite mounting pressure, Metro refused to leave the Russian market in 2022 and General Director Steffen Greubel has reaffirmed the company’s intention to continue operating in Russia. In fact, the company’s sales in Russia increased at an annual rate of 22.3%, reaching €2.9 billion euros, in the 2021-22 fiscal year.
