Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has commented on the state of the Xiaomi 13S series. With the Xiaomi 13 series launching earlier than their predecessors last year, Xiaomi may have also been expected to bring the Xiaomi 13S, Xiaomi 13S Pro and even a Xiaomi 13S Ultra to market.
A few days ago, Digital Chat Station posted on Weibo that there may not be new ‘S’ series smartphones from Xiaomi this year, leaving the likes of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra with no direct successors. Unsurprisingly, the leak prompted plenty of discussion about Xiaomi’s smartphone plans throughout the second half of 2023. For context, Xiaomi is preparing to release the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Lite and Xiaomi 13 Pro in Europe a few days from now, with the Xiaomi 13 Ultra likely following a few months later.
Now, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, has confirmed that Xiaomi has no intention of releasing a Xiaomi 13S series. Seemingly, this applies if Xiaomi maintains its current roadmap. Companies have been known to deviate from their release schedules, although this tends to occur with a product’s cancellation rather than rushing one to market. The Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro were relatively minor updates on the Xiaomi 12 series and may have only occurred because of issues inherent with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
A decision against releasing Xiaomi 13S series handsets does not preclude Xiaomi from bringing the Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro to market. Instead, the Xiaomi ‘T’ series is often the global version of the company’s China-only Redmi K series. Also, Xiaomi is expected to bring more flagship smartphones to market later this year, with the likes of the POCO F5. Moreover, Xiaomi may look to showcase the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the Xiaomi 14 series, launch details of which we have covered separately.
