The chikungunya candidate VLA1553 is a live-attenuated monovalent vaccine obtained by deleting a part of the chikungunya virus genome. Phase 3 trial data released in December show that 96–99% of adults develop a neutralizing antibody response that persists for up to a year after a single immunizing shot. To facilitate access in low- and middle-income countries, Valneva is collaborating with Brazil’s São Paolo-based Instituto Butantan to develop and manufacture VLA1553. A study of VLA1553 in young people is underway in Brazil.
