Kier appoints science and tech director

Kier Construction has hired John Sisk & Son’s life-sciences manager to its newly created role of science and technology director, as it looks to grow its volume of work in the sector.

Lee Sturdy had been sector leader for life sciences and advanced manufacturing at Sisk since May 2021.

In a statement, Kier said the appointment underlined its “strong commitment to delivering for the UK’s science, technology, and research and development sector”.

Science and technology work recently won by Kier includes the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s research and development building at Culham Science Centre, and several lots within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ Animal and Plant Health Agency science-estate framework.

In the role, Sturdy will work with existing public and private sector clients, setting the strategic direction for life-sciences work.

A chartered engineer, he has more than 30 years’ experience in the science and health sectors, across main contractor, consultancy, and specialist mechanical and electrical services for companies including Waterman Group and SES Engineering Services.

Kier managing director of clients and markets Louisa Finlay said: “The science and technology sector is where public and private investment and expertise meets, making it an important area of focus for Kier. As a sector that is growing and evolving rapidly, Lee’s expertise will be crucial as we deliver this type of specialist construction for our clients.”

His appointment follows Kier’s recruitment of a new head of sustainability in December.

Meanwhile, Mace has also been expanding its presence in the science sector in recent months. In an exclusive interview with Construction News, Mace Construct chief executive Gareth Lewis described landing four major jobs in its first year of operating in the life-sciences sector as “unheard of”. He added that the firm’s progress stands it in good stead to move into the building of battery-production factories.
