Zak Brown, le PDG de McLaren F1, n’est pas étonné qu’il y ait eu des erreurs dans le calcul du plafond budgétaire chez certaines équipes. L’Américain reconnait la difficulté de prise en compte de ces calculs, et salue la FIA pour la transparence vis-à-vis de Red Bull et de son dépassement de budget.

“Sa mise en œuvre est très difficile” a déclaré Brown dans le podcast de Marshall Pruett. “Vous avez intérêt à avoir un excellent directeur financier, qui comprenne comment fonctionne une équipe de Formule 1.”

“Vous devez faire des choix, savoir où dépenser votre argent et, évidemment, vous voulez le dépenser dans les domaines les plus performants, qu’il s’agisse du personnel, de la technologie ou autre. Avec la FIA, le processus a été très transparent.”

“La FIA a été extrêmement communicative, je veux dire, il n’y a pas une semaine qui passe sans que nous recevions un mémo, un avis ou une mise à jour. Ils sont donc constamment sur le coup. Je pense qu’ils sont très minutieux. Je ne pense pas qu’il y ait les lacunes que les gens craignaient qu’il y ait.”

Le plafond budgétaire sera “pris au sérieux”

Selon Brown, les sanctions appliquées par la FIA, qui consistent en une réduction du temps de développement aéro de 10 % et en une amende, est un signal fort envoyé aux teams quant aux risques en cas de dépassement : “Je pense donc que ce qui s’est passé cette année n’était pas prévu.”

“C’est malheureux que quelqu’un ait enfreint le plafond, mais il y a des gens comme des investisseurs et d’autres qui ont investi dans le sport sur la base d’un plafond de coûts et l’une des préoccupations est de savoir si cela sera un jour gérable. Est-ce que quelqu’un le respecterait, etc.”

“Donc je pense que lorsque nous avons eu ces quelques infractions, je pense qu’il était important que cela soit traité de manière appropriée et importante pour s’assurer que personne ne dépasse le plafond ou ne le prenne pas au sérieux. Je pense que tout le monde, y compris ceux qui ont eu des problèmes, a pris la chose au sérieux. Je pense que c’était aussi une victoire.”

Il assure toutefois qu’il croit en la bonne foi de Red Bull : “Mon opinion personnelle est que personne ne veut dépasser le plafond.”

“Vous voulez vous en rapprocher le plus possible et c’est une proposition difficile et effrayante parce que si vous avez regardé ce que vous voulez dépenser, vous voulez laisser un dollar sur la table, mais c’est tellement serré.”

“Vous pouvez avoir un accident à deux courses de la fin ou arracher l’aileron avant, vous ne savez pas. Donc c’est un peu un art et une science. Tout le monde doit juste être à l’aise avec l’espace qu’il se donne et avec le temps, je pense que ça deviendra moins étranger pour nous.”
