Oblivion Remastered’s Switch 2 News Is a Sad Reminder That the Game’s Still a Mess on PS5

Oblivion Remastered PS5 Performance

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered just got a release date. The port’s launching on the 11th August, meaning that it’ll arrive almost 16 months after it debuted on PS5.

And over all of that time, Bethesda and porting studio Virtuos have done so little to actually improve the state of the game on Sony’s current-gen console. Hell, on Xbox and PC, too.

Oblivion Remastered was rough at launch, which is laughable when you consider that it’s a modern, Unreal Engine remake of a 20-year-old title.

Packed with frame rate drops and seemingly random crashes that often left me in disbelief, I think my nostalgia for the original Oblivion is the only thing that really kept me playing.

It took close to two months for the first patch to arrive — version 1.511 — promising a concerning number of crash and bug fixes. To be fair, the update did improve the experience, and back then, the hope was that this was just the start.

How naive I was. With the game’s performance still bafflingly shoddy at times, patch 1.2 finally dropped in July of 2025, and then… nothing. That was it.

As Digital Foundry pointed out later that month, Oblivion Remastered remained borderline broken in places despite the good intentions of the aforementioned patch. After that, it was radio silence from Bethesda and Virtuos.

The remake has essentially been left to rot. Don’t get me wrong, it’s playable, but it’s still nowhere near the standards that we should be holding the likes of Bethesda to here in 2026 — meme-worthy track record or not.

And so this article’s just a reminder, really, of the sorry state that Oblivion Remastered was left in, while Bethesda begins to market a new version on a less powerful system. Let this be a warning, Nintendo fans.

Who knows, maybe Virtuos is back in the saddle and we’ll get an all-new update in conjunction with the Switch 2 release. But I’m certainly not holding my breath.

A little too much, some might say.
