Soccer AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles coach Chelle faces big decision as key player gets injured

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle could be facing one of his biggest selection decisions ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Soccernet.ng reports.

This comes as Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has suffered a shoulder injury that is expected to rule him out of the start of the new Serie A season.

According to reports, Okoye is expected to miss Udinese’s opening fixtures of the 26/27 campaign, forcing the Italian side into the transfer market, with head coach Kosta Runjaic confirming the imminent arrival of Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik from Watford as cover for the Nigerian international.

The timing of the injury is particularly significant for the Super Eagles, as Okoye had emerged as a leading contender for Nigeria’s number one shirt following an impressive campaign in Serie A.

The 26-year-old made 30 league appearances for Udinese last season, keeping 10 clean sheets and producing 81 saves as he further strengthened his reputation in one of Europe’s toughest leagues.

For much of that period, Okoye appeared to have the edge in the race to become Chelle’s first-choice goalkeeper due to the fact that Stanley Nwabali found himself without a club after leaving Chippa United.

However, with Nwabali now back at the South African side and expected to resume regular football, the goalkeeping debate has taken on a fresh dimension.

Okoye’s injury could now leave Chelle weighing up whether to restore faith in Nwabali, whose lack of competitive action over recent months remains a talking point, or hand an opportunity to another in-form option such as Arthur Okonkwo, who enhanced his growing reputation with a string of impressive performances for Wrexham last season.

Nigeria will begin their AFCON qualifying campaign in September, with Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania making up Group L.

Although Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the tournament as one of the hosts, the Taifa Stars will still participate in the qualifiers, leaving just one remaining qualification spot for the other three teams.

With little margin for error in the race for that solitary ticket, Chelle’s decision over who starts in goal could prove one of the defining selection calls of Nigeria’s quest to reach the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
