UFL Bids Farewell to Birmingham and Houston Franchises

The United Football League announced Thursday that it will depart Birmingham and Houston as part of its long-term strategic realignment, bringing an end to two franchises that played significant roles in the growth of modern spring football.

While the league is moving forward with plans to introduce new markets beginning in 2027, the departures of the Birmingham Stallions and Houston Roughnecks mark the close of memorable chapters for two passionate fan bases.

The Birmingham Stallions quickly became one of the premier organizations in spring football, building a championship culture and establishing themselves as one of the league’s flagship franchises. Their loyal supporters consistently embraced the team, creating an atmosphere that made Birmingham synonymous with spring football success. Despite that support, UFL Co-Owner Mike Repole said the size of Protective Stadium ultimately made it difficult to create the game-day environment the league envisioned.

“Departing a market is never easy and this decision is not a reflection of the dedication shown by players, coaches, fans, local partners, or civic leaders in Birmingham or Houston,” Repole said. “We are grateful for their passion, commitment, and support, which have helped shape the continued evolution of the UFL.”

Repole emphasized that Birmingham’s departure was driven by stadium logistics rather than a lack of fan enthusiasm, noting that even crowds of more than 16,000 fans struggled to generate the atmosphere the league desired in such a large venue. He also left the door open for a future return should a more suitable stadium become available.

Houston also leaves behind an important legacy. The Roughnecks became one of the most recognizable brands in spring football during the XFL era, while the Gamblers carried a rich football tradition dating back to the USFL of the 1980s. However, multiple venue changes, branding shifts, and organizational transitions prevented the franchise from establishing the continuity needed to build long-term momentum.

“Houston played an important role in reestablishing modern spring football,” Repole said. “We’re grateful to the fans, partners, and community who supported the Roughnecks and Gamblers.”

Although the UFL now turns its attention toward new markets and future expansion, Birmingham and Houston will remain an important part of the league’s history. Both cities helped sustain professional spring football during a critical period, produced memorable moments on the field, and cultivated fan bases that remained committed through every stage of the league’s evolution.

As the UFL prepares for its next era, the memories created by the Stallions and Roughnecks—and the fans who supported them—will not be forgotten. Their contributions helped lay the foundation for the league’s future, and their absence will undoubtedly be felt across the spring football landscape.
