Garcia calls for Torres to stay at Barcelona

Soccer

Joan Garcia wants to see Ferran Torres stay at Barcelona this summer amid speculation linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Torres joined Barcelona back in December 2021, with his contract set to run out at the end of the upcoming season.

He has impressed for Barcelona, scoring 65 goals across 207 appearances in all competitions, with his tally of 21 goals in 2025-26 his best return in a single campaign of his career.

Torres also caught the eye at the World Cup, scoring the only goal of the final against Argentina to ensure Spain secured their second title.

And Garcia is keen to keep playing alongside the striker this season.

“I’d be delighted if he stayed,” Garcia told reporters.

“He’s a great player, on and off the field. If it were up to me, of course he’d stay.”

Should Torres leave, Barcelona are already in the market for another forward, despite already bringing in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, having been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.

The Argentinian has been vocal in his desire to seek a move away from the Spanish capital, saying he wanted to “fulfil his dream” – which reports suggest is a move to Barcelona.

While Garcia refused to comment on Alvarez, he noted that he believes sporting director Deco will make the right choices for the squad.

“I can’t speak for other people,” he said when asked about Alvarez.

“There are many situations we’re certainly unaware of, and it would be a mistake to offer an opinion based on ignorance.

“I have a lot of faith in Deco’s work. We have a very competitive squad.”

Joan Garcia was also full of praise for another of Spain’s World Cup winners, though, lauding Pau Cubarsi’s involvement.

The teenager was named Young Player of the Tournament after a stellar showing in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

There are three instances on record (since 1966) of a player completing 100+ passes in a World Cup final. Two of these came via Spain players in 2026 – Rodri with 101 and Cubarsi with 121 (also Dunga for Brazil in 1994 with 130).

Garcia believes the sky is the limit for the 19-year-old, tipping him to be in the running for the Ballon d’Or in the future.

“He’ll be the best centre-back in the world,” Garcia said. “I always tell him he’s shameless.”
